dinner on day 3 was amazing! we went to a place called champor champor. it had really eclectic decor and plants everywhere. we got thai curry fish with green beans, rice, coconut fried calimari and thai spring rolls, plus a few drinks. it was so good!
after dinner i went and got the WORST bikini wax EVER! don't worry, i won't go into it lol suffice it to say it ended the night lol
Day 4
Cactus Resto for breakfast. this time we got traditional malay breakfast. i got nasi lemak (chicken curry and rice, came with a fried egg and tea). jens got roti jala (weird bread thing i can't really describe lol plus a different kind of chicken curry and tea).
then we rented a scooter and drove around, went up to the mall and got a couple bathing suits for me (buy one get one free) and then we had an unfortunately bad indian lunch lol we were grateful it did not make us sick!
then we drove more, had juice and read at a cafe and then i went to a yoga class at the only yoga studio on the island. the yoga instructor is a really soft spoken irishman. he and his chinese-malay wife live in the yoga studio. they were both really nice and friendly. their studio/house is also really nice. it overlooks a beautiful view of a field, flowers and palm trees. jens went and wrote a story in a nearby cafe so it was just two of us for the class- me and a big british guy. i had never been in such a small yoga class before but it was kind of nice. felt like i was getting a private lesson lol it was also the longest class i've ever taken- 2 hours. but it was good because we could take our time and do lots of different things.
first we did relaxation, then pranayama (breathing exercises) then some traditional hatha asanas (the poses). it was a MAJOR workout for me because i pretty much hadn't done yoga in a year lol i was sweating like crazy! i loved the class though. i wanted to go everyday we were here but unfortunately they are going on a yoga retreat for the next 3 days. after the class we sat and chatted with them on their porch. it was soooo nice! made me want to become a yoga instructor on langkawi too lol
after that we headed straight for the beach to watch the sunset- it was beautiful!
then we went back to the guesthouse for showers and then went to dinner at debbie's irish pub. jens got irish stew that was just absolutely wonderful and i got a really yummy cheeseburger and fries Po: those are two things the average traveler might not get a hankering for on a tropical island but living in korea for the past 3 years will make you eat anything delicious at any opportunity lol no irish stew in korea unless i make it myself! lol (and even then it's a bit difficult to get the ingredients and it takes a while to cook).
jens heard there was live music at a bar down the street so we headed down there and got a couple drinks. the band was really skilled but the songs they chose to play were not our style :o/ it was kinda fun though :o)
Day 5 - today
it rained a lot this morning so we got a late start.
we had brunch at a really cute little place called tomato garden (run by a german woman) and i loved it! it was so busy when we got there that we had to share a table with this random german lady but she was really nice and we chatted until she finished her coffee and left. her husband has taught in different schools all over the world therefore they've lived in all different places. it sounded awesome! wish jens liked to teach ;o) lol our meal was a big plate of fruit and a "farmer's plate" - potatoes, eggs, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes and turkey ham (no pork on this muslim island) all scrambled together- awesome!!! it came with a homemade wheat roll on the side which is another thing that you can't get in korea. we enjoyed every bite of it! the coffee was good too. we stayed a while and read and ordered more of that yummy bread.
then we FINALLY headed to the beach to swim! i'm probably the whitest person in all of langkawi lol (that british guy in the yoga class even commented: you're quite pale randi lol) but i didn't really feel self-conscious because it's mostly european tourists here and boy do they let it ALL hang out lol you can't really feel bad about your looks around them ;o) but it's great! i wish americans would relax more in that area too!
the water was great! really warm on top and just slightly cooler underneath and the waves were calm. if you floated on your back you could stay in the warm part of the water and look up at the big blue sky and the fluffy white clouds. in the distance you could see big round-topped mountains, palm trees and other green things. sooooo glorious! lol everyone should make it a goal to go to a tropical island sometime...it's just one of those really wonderful things. i do without fancy cars and big screen tvs for the rest of my life if i knew i'd get to go to tropicals islands every now and then instead :o)
after swimming for quite some time we got out and went to this beach bar called babylon. it's really rustic- all wood and corrugated metal, lop-sided tables and old plastic chairs. we got two tiger beers and read til we felt like swimming again.
swam some more and came back to the bar to get juice of the adjoining "juice shack" run by a british lady. we also got some samosas from the bar. before we left i bought a pretty bohemian-style cotton dress from the british lady.
then we just came back to the guesthouse, took showers and here i am. now all we have to do is eat dinner. we might go back to babylon later to hear some live music.
we're extending our stay on langkawi so we can just fly straight from here to singapore on the 13th.
alright! a bientot!

ReplyDeleteYes, tropical islands are definitely supreme! Jim and I went to St. Thomas and St. John way back in 1984, when Jens was 2 years old. I think it's time to go again!
